Hello,
a bit about me:

Hi, my name is Emilia Chavez. I'm an artist from Dripping Springs, TX. I just finished up my  BFA in Drawing & Painting at the University of North Texas. I'm inspired by all my surroundings whether its people, nature, or just my own imagination. I love making art out of anything I can get my hands on. My goal is to create art that's weird and whimsical, but also puts a smile on your face.

Artist Statement

Ever since I was little, I had an overactive imagination and often wished the otherworldly things I would see on tv and movies or read about in books actually existed. I’ve always loved to doodle and I often get lost in the smaller details of repetitive patterns and shapes.

Throughout the various mediums I work in, most of my work is inspired by normal everyday objects and people in my life. I like using common motifs like hearts, eyes, and flowers and giving them their own little personalities. I create things I wish existed. I use characters to exaggerate my own experiences, but I also use them to create an escape from daily life. These characters often have overemphasized facial expressions, appearing excessively sad or happy, or  angry. I strive to create beings and environments unlike our own to inspire a sense of wonder and curiosity. I want my work to spark joy and a little bit of laughter. I don't necessarily take things too seriously and I just want to have fun creating my work and hope other people feel the same way when looking at it.

Most of my works are drawings and paintings, but I do like to venture out and experiment with different mediums like metals and clay. Each medium has a different process and there are some things you can do with one material, but not with another. I still create similar figures in my 3D work, but working with something that isn't flat gives me the ability to add more depth and physical texture. It allows me to bring the characters I doodle to life like I wished I could when I was a kid.
